Japanese for “snow battle”, Yukigassen is a fast-paced competitive sport that could not be more “truly Canadian in nature”. This dynamic sport is played on a snow court where teams of seven battle with 90 snowballs per period in an attempt to eliminate the opposing team or capture their flag. Conceived in Japan in 1988, the first tournament was held in 1989 and attracted 70 teams and 7,000 spectators. Last year’s event drew 172 teams from around the world and attracted more than 25,000 spectators.

After more than 20 years in Japan, this energetic sport is now blowing up across Canada! Yukigassen Canada holds exclusive rights to the sport, and is recognized by the Japan Yukigassen Federation (official governing body).
